The Fixed-Dollar Popup Funnel

“$50 off your next stay” beats “10% off” even when the percentage is worth more — run the fixed-dollar popup, capture trip intent with it, and let a tagged welcome series do the selling.

The play

  1. Lead with a fixed dollar amount

“$50 off your next stay” consistently out-converts percentage offers in our client tests — even when the percentage is objectively worth more. Visitors react to the concrete number. Better still, ladder it by stay length: $50 off any stay, $100 off four nights, $250 off a week — the ladder nudges longer bookings while keeping the entry offer cheap. Always take the discount off rent, not fees.

  2. Make it two steps, and make step two work for you

Step one captures the email. Step two asks two quick questions: how big is your group, and when are you thinking of traveling (weeks out / months out / just browsing). Completion barely drops, and every answer lands in your ESP as a tag.

  3. Build the 4-email welcome series

Four emails over about ten days: the discount code and how to use it; the properties that fit their group size (big groups see the lodges, couples see the romantic units); the book-direct case (what the OTAs charge them); and a last-call nudge. The tags from step two drive which properties they see.

  4. Keep the fine print nearly invisible

Restrictions kill redemption. Take the discount off rent, keep exclusions minimal (maybe peak holiday weeks), and let the code work. An honored $50 code that produces a $2,000 direct booking is the cheapest acquisition you’ll ever run.

  5. Offer a frequency choice at signup

A small “how often do you want to hear from us?” — monthly, twice a month, weekly — sets expectations and protects your sender reputation. Honor it religiously.

  6. Wire the data path before launch

Test that popup fields, tags, and the automation trigger actually reach the ESP — including names with apostrophes and plus-sign emails. Half the “popup doesn’t work” complaints we see are a broken handoff, not a broken popup.

  7. Test dollar-vs-percent in parallel, never back to back

Run the comparison as a simultaneous split over 30–90 days. Sequential tests are seasonality-poisoned — a “winner” that ran during spring break beats nothing. Tag codes by channel (a separate code for Instagram, the popup, the welcome series) so redemptions attribute themselves.

What to expect

Capture rate
A well-built popup converts 1–3% of site visitors into subscribers; above 1% is healthy. Sitting near 0.1%? Your popup has no incentive — adding a real fixed-dollar offer roughly tripled capture (0.5% to 1.4%) in one of our head-to-head client tests.
Welcome series performance
Fresh popup subscribers routinely open at ~50% — roughly double a healthy general list. This is the hottest audience you’ll ever email; don’t waste it on a single “thanks for subscribing.”
Good result
The list becoming your fastest-compounding asset: every month of capture is a bigger audience for every future send, at zero incremental cost.

Immediate action

Check your current popup’s offer. If it’s a percentage or a plain “subscribe,” brief the fixed-dollar two-step version today — it’s a one-week swap.
